How to play Daily Missing Vowels

Each day you get five words with the vowels knocked out. Every a, e, i, o and u is replaced by a blank tile, while the consonants stay exactly where they belong — so P L _ N _ T is waiting to become planet. Type the full word into the box under each puzzle and press Enter. Because the game checks the shape against a full dictionary, any real word that fits the consonant pattern is accepted, and some skeletons have more than one answer. The letter Y counts as a consonant here, so it's left showing to give you an extra clue. The five words come from the calendar date, which means everyone plays the same puzzle each day, with a new set at midnight your local time. Progress is saved in your browser.

How to crack a skeleton

Start with the consonant clusters. Combinations like str, ch, thr and ng sharply narrow what the word can be, and common endings — -tion, -ing, -er, -ly — often reveal themselves before you've placed a single vowel. Count the blanks, too: a two-blank word with four consonants has a very different rhythm from a one-blank word. When you're torn between, say, bread and broad, remember that both may be accepted if they fit.

Need a nudge?

If a skeleton won't budge, our crossword solver takes a pattern of known letters and blanks and lists everything that fits — perfect for missing-vowel shapes. The word lists A–Z are another good way to widen the vocabulary you draw on. Reach for them when you'd rather learn a word than tap reveal.
